Consumer Protection for Private Student Loan Borrowers
You have rights. Collection agencies routinely violate them. PSLA Center fights back on your behalf. (858) 799-0381
Your Rights Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
The FDCPA is a federal law that limits what debt collectors can do and say when collecting debts. Collection agencies must follow these rules — and many violate them regularly when contacting private student loan borrowers.
- Collectors cannot contact you before 8am or after 9pm
- Collectors cannot use abusive, threatening, or obscene language
- Collectors cannot make false statements or misrepresent themselves
- Collectors cannot claim to be attorneys or government officials if they are not
- Collectors must stop contacting you if you request it in writing
- Collectors must provide written validation of the debt if you request it
⚠️ Beware of This Scam Company
PSLA Center pioneered private student loan debt validation in 2012. Our success attracted copycat operations that have tried to imitate what we built — without the knowledge, experience, or legitimacy behind it. The most dangerous of these is currently operating under multiple websites.
Scam Alert: privatestudentrelief.com and Related Sites
There is a scam operation running ads under multiple websites, primarily privatestudentrelief.com, privatestudentaidnow.com, and privateloanreliefservices.com, among others.
Red flags:
- They use fake addresses — including the Spectrum Mall in Irvine, CA
- Multiple phone numbers all redirecting to the same place
- Their ads are paid for by E-IDEAS LIMITADA, a shell company based in Colombia
- They copied PSLA Center's website content verbatim when they launched
- They falsely claim 5-star TrustPilot ratings and AADR accreditation
- Their privacy policies reveal the sites are owned by offshore shell companies
- One ad claims to be paid for by "Private Loan Relief Services LLC" — a company not registered anywhere
Do not give this company any of your personal or financial information.
You can view the E-IDEAS LIMITADA Google Ads at the Google Ads Transparency Center.
Beware of Debt Settlement Scams
Many companies market "debt settlement" as a solution for private student loan borrowers. This is ineffective and often predatory for private student loan debt specifically:
- Private lenders — Navient, AES, Sallie Mae, Wells Fargo — generally do not agree to settle private student loan debt
- Debt settlement companies collect monthly fees while holding your money in escrow, doing nothing
- Your debt continues to grow with interest and fees during the process
- Your credit continues to be damaged
- You may owe taxes on any forgiven amount
Debt validation — what PSLA Center does — is fundamentally different. It is a legal challenge to the collection agency's right to collect, not a negotiation. And we have a 99% success rate.
